Weekly Events Update, September 26, 2024

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

Sat Sept 28 Lucy MacNeil

7:30pm King’s Theatre. Live Music. $35 Adults. $5 Youth. Lucy MacNeil returns to King’s Theatre with her trio for an intimate show that takes you into the heart of Cape Breton. Lucy has been performing with the Barra MacNeils for 35 years. They come from a long tradition of Cape Breton music and dance that has been the foundation of creative pursuits over their musical career.

2 – 4 pm Oakdene Centre, Bear River. Talk by Laura Churchill Duke on her book about the murder of Annie Kempton: The trial of Peter Wheeler, a true crime story from Bear River 1896.


Sun Sep 29 Edward Scissorhands

3pm King’s Theatre. Dance Stage to Screen. Adult  $15.95 Youth Free Presented by New Adventures, Martin McCallum and Marc Platt, Matthew Bourne’s magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands has carved a place in the hearts of audiences world-wide since its premiere in 2005. Based on the classic Tim Burton movie and featuring the hauntingly beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and his New Adventures Company return to this witty, bittersweet story of an incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world.

Wed Oct 2 Fancy Dance

7:30pm King’s Theatre Film Indie Drama. PG $10.95 Adult $6.95 Youth. Since her sister’s disappearance, Jax (Lily Gladstone) has cared for her niece Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson) by scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma. Every spare minute goes into finding her missing sister while also helping Roki prepare for an upcoming powwow. At the risk of Jax losing custody to Roki’s grandfather, Frank (Shea Whigham), the pair hit the road and scour the backcountry to track down Roki’s mother in time for the powwow. What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system.

Sun Oct 20 Titanic, The Musical

3pm King’s Theatre. Musical, Stage to Screen. TICKETS: $15.95 The original Broadway production of Titanic The Musical won five ‘Tony’ Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. This stunning production celebrates the 10th anniversary of its London premiere where it won sweeping critical acclaim across the board.


Sat Oct 26 The Nightmare Before Christmas

5:30pm King’s Theatre Free Film, Family, Special Event. PG The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world.” When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life — he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry.

7:30pm Kings Theatre Free Film, Sci-Fi, Horror. 14A. In deep space, the crew of the commercial starship Nostromo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel. The terror begins when the crew encounters a nest of eggs inside the alien ship. An organism from inside an egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causing him to fall into a coma.

Sun Nov 10 Grounded

3pm King’s Theatre. Stage to Screen Met Opera. $15.95. Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo, one of opera’s most compelling young stars, headlines in the tour-de-force role of Jess, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she adjusts to this new way of doing battle, she struggles under the pressure to be the perfect soldier, the perfect wife, and the perfect mother all at the same time.
