And so starts October! Next Tuesday, the 8th, is the deadline for the Oct issue. If you have any events to be added to our print issue, please let us know ASAP. Oct. 1 to Nov. 30 Adopt-A-Book Campaign

All libraries. People can help put 750 new books on your public library’s shelves. The public library’s Adopt-a-Book campaign puts new books on library shelves throughout the region. The titles you purchased help your library offer the latest books to 16,000 users across Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties. Visit a library branch or westerncounties.ca to support this fundraiser.

Sat Oct 5 Dancing the Seven Teachings

7pm King’s Theatre Dance Adults $30.00     Youth: $15.00 Dancing the Seven Teachings is a new dance work imbued with ancient knowledge. A family-friendly program of two pieces, each brings a different story through the art of Indigenous hoop dancing, ballet, and contemporary dance. The two works are Bears Stars and Trees and Trickster’s Romeo and Juliet.

October 8 - 19 Hydraulic Mini-Excavator Kit Grab-and-Go

All libraries while supplies last. Youth 12 and older can pick up a hydraulic mini-excavator kit to make at home during library open hours while supplies last. The kits contain all the necessary supplies and information on careers in heavy vehicle technology. This program is in partnership with Skills Canada-Nova Scotia.

Tuesday, Oct. 8 Celebrate Seniors Week

6 to 8 p.m. Weymouth Library In celebration of Seniors Week, join library staff for an evening of cribbage. This will be a fun evening to demonstrate your card skills and luck. Crib boards and cards will be provided.


Wed Oct 9 Widow Clicquot

7:30pm King’s Theatre, Film, Drama, Biography $10.95 Adult, $6.95 Youth. Wednesday, Oct. 16, Pssst … Alzheimer Society Can Help You!

1 to 2 p.m. Digby Library. Sandra Hubbard-LeBlanc from Alzheimer Society of NS will conduct an information session about the society’s programming and services. She will also answer your questions about dementia. Register no later than Saturday, Oct. 12 by contacting the library.

Thursday, Oct. 17 Science Club

3 to 4 p.m. Digby Library. Explore the wonders of science through exciting, themed experiments. This program is for children aged 7 to 11. Register no later Tuesday, Oct. 15 by contacting the library.

Tuesday, Oct. 22, Using the Internet Safely

2 to 4 p.m. Meteghan Library. Learn how to avoid scams, viruses, and misinformation in the one-hour presentation. Afterwards, there will be one hour for specific tech help or questions. Bring your devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop). Register no later than Friday, Oct. 18 by contacting the library.

Tuesday, Oct. 22 Community Costume Swap

2 to 6 p.m. Digby Library. For Waste Reduction Week, the library has partnered with Waste Check to host the 3rd annual costume swap. Come in on Tuesday, Oct. 22, bring your old costume, find a new to you costume. Costumes will be available for all ages. Donations of costumes will be accepted at the library up until the day of the swap.

6:30 to 8 p.m. Digby library. Join Colleen Humbert for lively and in-depth discussions of the contemporary western The Outlander by Gil Adamson. Participants were to register by Sept. 11 to reserve their spot and receive the books. This program is for adults.

Thursday, Oct. 31 Trick-or-Treat at the Library

NOVEMBER

Art Exhibition at Weymouth Library – Hika Wagner. This exhibition presents folk art paintings on canvas and wood featuring a variety of animals by artist Hika Wagner. The artist has been painting since 2001 on driftwood, canvas rocks and buoys.  She mostly paints animals, and her favorite subjects are cats. The work can be viewed during open hours in November.

Tue Nov 5 An Evening for Teens

Wed Nov 7 Writing Short Fiction

6-8pm Meteghan Library. This 4-week workshop with author Julian Mortimer Smith is open to any adult (18+) who is interested in writing fiction. No experience is necessary. Space is limited to 15 people. Register no later than Tuesday, Nov. 5 by contacting the library. This program is in English.

DECEMBER

Tue Dec 3 Cookie Exchange and Game Night

6-7:30pm Weymouth Library.  This is a traditional evening of laughter, fun, and good cookies. Participants need to bring three dozen cookies (of the same kind) with recipes to exchange with others. Register no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29 by contacting the library.

Tue Dec 3 Building Good Habits

6-7pm Meteghan Library. Registered dietician Kaitlyn Comeau will discuss making healthy habits for yourself in a way that is beneficial and sustainable. Learn about the pros of micro-habits and habit-stacking, and how they can change your life for the better. Register no later than Friday, Nov. 29 by contacting the library. This program was made possible thanks to a food literacy grant from Nova Scotia Provincial Library.

Sat Dec 7 Clay Christmas Ornaments

10am-12pm Meteghan Library. Children can make Christmas tree ornaments out of salt dough clay.

Tue Dec 10 Twelve Days of Christmas

6-7:30pm Weymouth Library. Children aged 6 to 12 can enjoy a fun-filled evening of games, snacks and stories with the theme of The Twelve Days of Christmas. Space is limited so register no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 by contacting the library.

Tue Dec 10 Healthy Eating on a Budget

6-7:30pm Meteghan Library Registered dietician Kaitlyn Comeau will discuss how to eat healthier, more balanced meals while not breaking the bank. Space is limited to 16 people and is for adults. Register no later than Friday, Dec. 6 by contacting the library. This program was made possible thanks to a food literacy grant from Nova Scotia Provincial Library.

Wed Dec 11 Service Canada Information Session

1pm – 2pm Digby Library.  Join Craig Moulaison from Service Canada to learn about some of the programs and services available. He will be discussing Employment Insurance, Social Insurance Numbers, Canada Pension Plan/Old Age Security, Passports, and Canadian Dental Care Plan. The session incudes a question-and-answer period at the end.
